Student lunches are provided by the school at a cost to the parents. The menu is posted in the BHMS lobby. Under the Ministry Day Nursery Act, students who are under five and not participating in a hot lunch program must sign a waiver. The lunch menu is subject to change. BHMS is committed to providing nutritious meals to all students. Our aim in the BHMS kitchen is to:
- Increase whole grain products
- Limit fat content
- Limit sugar
- Reduce or omit the sodium
In addition, healthy cooking techniques like baking and steaming instead of frying and boiling, which drains the nutrients, are used. Many food favourites like chicken fingers, potato wedges and mini pizzas are homemade, using quality fresh ingredients. Fresh herbs such as basil, garlic, chives and parsley are used. Our lunch program meets the nutrition guidelines based on the dietary guidelines set by the Canada Food Guide. BHMS continues to meet and exceed virtually all of the recommended daily allowances for key nutrients. The meals are age appropriate in serving size and presented to the students in a way that promotes proper mealtime etiquette. It’s a wonderful lesson about trying new foods and sharing a meal with others. The Lunch Program is available for the Toddler Programs up to Junior High.
